Only three weeks to the Conference

It’s only three weeks to go to the Bushfire CRC – AFAC annual conference, with a wide range of speakers and researchers confirmed.

The opening keynote speaker is Ben Self, founder of Blue State Digital in Kentucky, noted for providing a variety of technology and services to the successful 2008 Barack Obama presidential campaign. He will talk about using the internet and social media to engage the community.

Other invited speakers include Sir Ken Knight, HM Chief Inspector of Fire Services, UK, Gregory Lo, Director of Fire Services, Hong Kong Fire Services Department, who will talk about their work, and Professor Jose Terero, Head, Institute for Infrastructure and Environment at the University of Edinburgh, who will talk about smart buildings and how the World Trade Center towers might still be standing.

As well has having researchers talking at many of the conference sessions, and a big display of research posters, the Bushfire CRC’s work will really be shining at our Science Day on the final day of the conference. Around 30 of our researchers will discuss their work with industry delegates in four streams over the day.

The pre-conference professional development program has attracted much interest with only a few places left. This year there is also a post-conference workshop on Fire Weather and Risk – from Research to Operations. Details for registration are on the conference website.

The conference is being held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, at Darling Harbour, Australia from Monday 29 August to Thursday 1 September 2011. And for the first time, the whole conference program will also be available as a phone app - stand by for details.
