The DC-10 firefighting tanker jet trialled in Victoria last summer will not return this fire season after a comprehensive Bushfire CRC evaluation of its performance found the aircraft unsuited to Victorian conditions.

The final report of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission recommends the establishment of a national centre for bushfire research. This reflects a proposal put to the Commission by Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre Chief Executive Officer Gary Morgan for the creation of an Australasian Fire Research Institute to build on the work of the Bushfire CRC.
