The final report of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission recommends the establishment of a national centre for bushfire research. This reflects a proposal put to the Commission by Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre Chief Executive Officer Gary Morgan for the creation of an Australasian Fire Research Institute to build on the work of the Bushfire CRC.

A two-day forum on Fire in the High Country attracted 110 people in May 2010. The forum was held in Albury and featured much Bushfire CRC research from the HighFire Project as well as other Bushfire CRC research related to the issue.

Bushfire CRC PhD student Briony Towers was selected as a top four finalist in the Early Career Scientist Award to present to the CRC Association Annual Conference in May 2010 - the first social scientist to achieve that honor.
