This project by James Minas is investigating how Operations Research (OR tools/techniques) can be used to aid the management of bushfire risk, with a special interest in the provision of decision-support for managers making decisions under uncertainty.
Potential areas of applications of operations research in bushfire management include strategic planning, resource deployment, resource dispatch, information flow and fire detection.
I will be developing a mathematical programming (MP) model that will act as an integrated framework for fuel treatment and suppression preparedness planning. The aim of the model is to provide decision support to land and fire management agencies and assist with: strategic planning and budgeting, seasonal deployment of suppression resources and spatial allocation of fuel treatment. The model will be risk-based with explicit consideration given to uncertainty and multi-objectivity.
