Understanding Risk

Fire is complex, possibly the most complex, of the natural disasters. The factors involved in mitigating the risk are sometimes in conflict with other values that the residents seek.

The work in this program seeks to understand the underlying risk exposure of the community and the things it values. The work of the program will explore and understand these conflicts, examine the complexity of regulation, legislation and policy relating to fire management, and build a risk evaluation model that can help residents, policy-makers, asset owners and fire managers simulate the impact of decisions made and examine the trade-offs.
