Ian has a Degree in Computer Science from the University of Canberra, a Graduate Diploma in Science from the Australian National University and a Master of Science from the University of NSW. As an early career researcher Ian worked mostly in IT support positions at the University of NSW, where he also researched computer simulation of bushfires (from 1986 to 1995).

His research culminated with the successful simulation of a bushfire using Huygen’s Principle and an analysis of what was necessary to perform bushfire simulations using real geographic and weather information. Since 1995 Ian has worked for various Australian Government Agencies as a business analyst, team leader and project manager for large IT and business improvement projects. He re-commenced his continuing interest in the computer simulation of bushfires in July 2011 when he joined Geoscience Australia as the Activity Leader on the FIRE-DST project.
