Resident experiences of the October 2013 bushfires in New South Wales' Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and Port Stephens areas have been analysed in a report by the Bushfire CRC.
Following these devastating bushfires, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioned the Bushfire CRC to conduct community-focused research with a number of fire-affected communities.
Fire Note 128: This research provides a broad conceptual framework to understand and progress the principle of shared responsibility in risk and disaster management.
The findings investigate the complexities and challenges of shared responsibility and address the fundamental questions: What is it and how do we do it?
As a starting point, the research recommends an inclusive and collaborative, inquiry-based approach between governments, communities and their individual citizens in scoping out their responsibility sharing challenges and processes.
The Bushfire CRC has produced an ebook for parents on how to talk to children about bushfire preparation and safety.
This Bushfire CRC project is developing an advanced software program that will help fire managers fight bushfires faster and more effectively, while also identifying communities most at risk from fire. The research team explains the early stages of this research in this video.
