Research, resilience and impact at RAA25

Release date

25 November 2025

Innovative, impactful research and programs were recognised and celebrated at the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience’s (AIDR) 2025 Resilient Australia Awards in Melbourne on Monday.

As a key AIDR partner, Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) was honoured to support the award judging and ceremony proceedings, with the Centre’s Community experiences of the 2022-2023 floods across eastern and southern Australia: a collaborative, multi-state research project shortlisted in the national research for impact category.

Centre CEO Andrew Gissing believes the strong representation of Centre research and staff in the awards highlights its unique place as Australia’s natural hazards research capability.

“This year’s Resilient Australia Awards showcased what is possible when we work together,” Andrew said.

Communications Manager, Joanna Wood Freeman formed part of national photography award judging panel and presented the award.

A Centre researched-backed program was highly commended in the national research for impact category, using data from the refreshed Australian Disaster Resilience Index to explore the integration of cultural capital into Local Emergency Management on the Tiwi Islands in the Exploring Cultural Capital Development and Local Emergency Management on Country initiative.
