Pitches open for research concepts

Release date

30 June 2022

Proposals for future research concepts can now be submitted by partners of Natural Hazards Research Australia for funding consideration over the coming year.

The Centre’s initial research program was developed with sector engagement in parallel to the national Research Priorities and the 10-Year Research Strategy. Any new research accepted through this current call for concepts will contribute to the Centre's ongoing research portfolio and will be guided by the rolling Biennial Research Plan.

Submissions can be made at any time of the year, although concepts will only be formally considered for funding twice a year (April and October). To be considered in the October 2022 process, concepts are due by 7 September 2022.

Concepts submitted after 7 September are unlikely to be considered for funding in October 2022. Concepts received with requests for more urgent approval at other times must include a strong rationale for why the research should be considered at that time.

Importantly, concepts that were not accepted in April 2022 are encouraged to refine their pitch and resubmit. The Centre’s Node Research Managers, Nicola Moore, Dr Blythe McLennan, Dr Kat Haynes and Loriana Bethune, can assist partners with this where required.

Three criteria must be met for concepts to be considered for funding:

  • The expectations of the research are clear.
  • There is strong commitment from the partner organisation/s proposing the research.
  • Partner organisation/s are clear on how the outcomes of the research will be implemented.

The Centre’s research focus areas for this call for concepts are detailed in the Research focus 2022-23 document, which outlines research topics that will most help promote natural hazard resilience and reduce disaster risk in the next few years.

The Centre welcomes submissions of project concepts for potential inclusion in the research program, including ideas for short-, medium- or long-term projects that can be effectively translated and used by organisations across Australia.

Research can be pitched by representatives of any of the Centre’s partners listed here, including agencies, associations, federal government, state government and local government organisations. Representatives from academic/research and other organisations wishing to collaborate on projects cannot submit project concepts directly to the Centre, but are encouraged to work with the Centre’s partners to develop research concepts that can be submitted by those partner organisations.

All submission details are available on the ‘Submitting a project idea’ page
