Supervisor: Professor Andrew Sturman, University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Colin's project investigated the dynamic interactions between a wildfire and the surrounding atmosphere. These interactions are important as fire behaviour is strongly influenced by atmospheric conditions, which are themselves strongly affected locally by active wildfires. The resulting complex feedback system between fire behaviour and weather can be investigated using coupled atmosphere-fire behaviour models.
Through improved understanding of the physical processes causing these interactions, improvements can be made to existing fire behaviour models. Improved models will aid fire managers in their planning and emergency response decisions, allowing for better wildfire preparation and suppression.
