Nominations are open for the annual Natural Hazards Research Australia 2026 Awards, celebrating the people behind exceptional natural hazards research and the hard work involved in saving lives and protecting communities. 

The awards will be presented at the Natural Hazards Research Forum 2026 (NHRF26) in Adelaide, running from 10 to 12 June. 

Nominations are open until 10 May for three award categories:  

  • Research Team Award

  • Postgraduate Student Award 

  • Leading to Impact Award.  

The Research Team Award celebrates a research project that demonstrates excellence in:  

  • Outstanding research quality  

  • Collaboration and engagement between researchers and end-users to ensure the research is useful  

  • Translation of the research findings to ensure the research is usable  

  • Research outcomes and impact ensuring that the research is used.  
     

Nominate for the Research Team Award here. 

The Postgraduate Student Award recognises a postgraduate student project that demonstrates excellence in:  

  • Outstanding research quality, including but not limited to publication in high quality publications  

  • Collaboration and engagement between researchers and end-users to ensure the research is useful  

  • Translation, or potential to translate, the research findings to ensure the research is usable  

  • Research outcomes and impact ensuring that the research is used.  

Nominate for the Postgraduate Student Award here. 

The newest award, the Leading to Impact Award, honours an individual or organisation classified as an end-user that: 

  • Demonstrates exemplar leadership and engagement in research translation for impact    

  • Translates research into practice  

  • Delivers measurable impact  

  • Contributes to improved disaster resilience across Australia.

Centre CEO Andrew Gissing said that the awards are aimed at celebrating just some of the people who contribute to the Centre’s mission of producing and implementing useful and useable research. 

"With so many passionate people working hard to ensure communities are safer in the face of worsening natural hazard risk, nominating someone for an award is much deserved recognition,” Mr Gissing said. 

”Our new Leading to Impact Award honours the critical role end-users play in this process – turning research into practice and helping to build disaster resilience across the country”.
