More than 35 New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) staff put their collective knowledge together to identify key research gaps and issues in a workshop with Natural Hazards Research Australia (the Centre) in December 2024.
Butchers paper, stick notes, positive energy and teamwork helped the team to create a list of specific research priorities, with NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing supportive of the process.
"Having research to inform our future intergenerational needs as an agency are crucial and I look forward to the next steps," Commissioner Wassing said.
Participants learnt about program logics and their application in developing successful research concept proposals for future Centre investment rounds.
A bonus outcome of the workshop was the sharing of information between different directorates in NSW SES and the increased knowledge on current research projects.
Workshop participants analysed 195 research issues submissions using pivot tables then grouping the data into themes, topics and tags.
NSW SES now have agency-prioritised project ideas ready to work up for the current Centre concept round, which close 5pm AEDT 28 February 2025.
