In 2021, the Developing capability targets for the New South Wales (NSW) emergency management sector project through the previous Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC partnered with Resilience NSW to further advance the NSW Capability Development Framework to include a series of capability targets.

Developed in partnership with the Centre, Risk Frontiers, Macquarie University and the Australian National University, these benchmarks help support capability, capacity and preparedness to meet the needs of a climate changed Australia

Project details

The outcomes of Catastrophic and cascading events: planning and capability project informed the development of a capability assessment tool. This tool assists organisations with emergency management responsibilities to assess their capability maturity to adequately prepare for and manage severe to catastrophic disasters.

The tool supports the intended outcomes of the Australian Disaster Preparedness Framework (Department of Home Affairs, 2018) and has already been used by several states and territories. It aligns with the recommendations of recent inquiries and reviews including the National Natural Disaster Arrangements Royal Commission and the Independent Review of Commonwealth Disaster Funding. In partnership with NSW
Reconstruction Authority the research was extended to define capability targets for the NSW emergency management sector.
