Workshop at Natural Hazards Research Forum 2025

Register now for the NHRF25 Pre-forum Workshop event that introduces the Transformative Scenarios resources into agencies and how to best use the resources and get the most out of the process.

Based on research with senior emergency management experts and leaders in Australia and New Zealand, the Transformative Scenarios resources provide the tools to stress-test your strategic priorities, plans and policies with your Boards and senior executive leadership teams. They are designed to support emergency management and community sector organisations navigate complex, long-term challenges and create opportunities in an ever-changing landscape.

This workshop provides an overview of how to introduce the Transformative Scenarios resources into your agency or organisation. Whether you are the Strategic Planning Officer, or simply passionate about your organisation being ready for the impacts of climate change, this workshop provides an overview of the Transformative Scenarios process and how you can use the resources to facilitate discussions, guide teams, and ensure the process stays collaborative, inclusive and productive. This session will guide you in your role to bring people together, hold space for open dialogue and ensure everyone’s input is valued as we plan for an uncertain future.

Project details

This research utilisation project is a joint project with the Australasian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC) Climate Change Group to further develop the translation, utilisation and application of the Transformative Scenarios in a Climate Challenged World resources within a needs-based approach.

It will be informed by a project reference group comprised of key individuals from jurisdictional emergency management agencies, the Bureau of Meteorology, thought leaders in the climate and disaster field and other relevant sectors. This group will provide an important advisory and testing role throughout the project.

The project will take an incremental and staged approach:

Stage 1: An initial stakeholder needs analysis will provide required detail on the range of potential barriers and opportunities agencies have experienced in the application of the existing resources, as well determine as suitable utilisation/application pathways and the appropriate design and development of required resources and materials.

Stage 2: A small number of case studies, where different application/utilisation pathways and professional development resources for their use, will be tested and evaluated with key stakeholders.

Stage 3: A standardised approach with required resources will then be developed and complemented with elements requiring a more tailored approach to ensure the final approaches and products can meet the different needs and contexts across a range of priority sectors.

Stage 4: The project will use the needs analysis and further stakeholder engagement to determine opportunities to promote, socialise and apply the scenario resources with the AFAC Climate Change Group and other relevant sectors and organisations, with the development of a multi-jurisdictional and cross-sector communications plan.
